2016. As above, so below, or is it?
The most overriding influence this year is the transit that began in 2015. Saturn in a Last Quarter Square to Neptune. Even though the next peak is not until June, the influence of Saturn is long term. This year’s theme: reality versus alternate reality.
Do the images we see match the truth of what is going on? It’s the Conspiracy Tango. Well, that is how it feels to me when Saturn and Neptune dance. This is a Last Quarter Square, so the partnership is tense. The two might want to break up, because the reality for each is perceived so differently.
Saturn, as Mark Jones writes in his latest book, Heal the Soul, can represent the Super Ego, which carries the conditioning of family, culture and community. The Super Ego can be a hard task master, when we don’t live up to its rules.
Jeffrey Wolfe Green, correlates Neptune to Consciousness, in his latest book, The Structure of the Soul. As Jeffrey might say, we can’t open up the brain and see consciousness. So, how is ‘consciousness’ defined? Anywhere from “breathing” to “Awakened” with a capital A. Saturn may attempt a definition; however, it is necessarily clouded in conditioning of the culture.
I’m writing a bit of convoluted astrology with no resolution or ending. In a way, it is on purpose, because who can predict the outcome of this transit or the year? In the end the perception depends on both consciousness and conditioning. We can swing from illusion to practicality. If we only look to external references, we may be persuaded to believe what is not true.
I’m reminded of the Who’s “I won’t be Fooled Again.” 2016. A year to stay alert and question what you think you see or who you think you are.

January 5. Mercury Retrograde
January 7. Jupiter Retrograde
January 9. Capricorn New Moon
January 23. Leo Full Moon Leo
January 25. Mercury Direct
The year starts with the Messenger, Mercury, slowing down, slow slow, to turn Retrograde on the 5th.
Over the years of writing about Mercury Retrograde, I hope I have learned to tone down the fear factor. The more we relax into natural flow rather than artificially made schedules and constructs, Mercury Retrogrades, stops being worrisome. Instead, we review, reflect, take care of loose ends and details, plan for software upgrades. We might meet with people from the past. And, we don’t go out of our way to sign contracts.
There are four Mercury retrogrades in 2016. How about that?
January’s Mercury retrograde starts in Aquarius and ends up in Capricorn having made contact with Uranus and Pluto three times. (The first was December 20, 2015.) Likely they will include another set of those messages to remind us about the profound evolutionary journey we are on during this era.
Mercury correlates to the mind and linear thinking. Jupiter, also changing direction in January, represents intuition, and right brained thinking. It is Stationary Retrograde on the 7th.
A highlight of January is the Moon’s North Node conjoining Jupiter at the end of the month. Here is a portal of vision into our destiny where Virgo falls in our own birth maps.
