Would you believe that in an 18 month period, you could resolve an area of life that may have been, up to now, stressful and sometimes traumatic. Would you believe you could open your heart to your true Light, the purpose of your Life?
When it come to evolution, a fancy word for change, some embrace it, others fear it. How scary change is depends on circumstances, perspective, and adaptability.
Some changes are frightening when we have no control. You know, like when someone dies, breaks up with us, the economy goes bust and we lose our retirement and so on. Most of us have stories of stressful times. Some use circumstances to build strength and character. Others continue in darkness which consumes their lives.
What I love about Evolutionary Astrology is how it reveals areas that are ripe for change. This symbolic language also can tell us how long of a cycle is involved for a specific change.
This article is about the Lunar Nodes and how awareness of their cycle can be useful in our lives. These Nodes are changing zodiac signs. This means that an 18.6 month cycle begins. The promise of seeing our future is brighter. There’s LIGHT at the end of the tunnel, if we choose to look into it.
Here’s the wrinkle. It takes some astrological detective work to figure out what it all means for us personally. I’ll get to that later. We can get a feel for this transition, if we look at the bigger picture first.
From end of April 2017 to mid-November 2018, the South Node is in Aquarius and the North Node in Leo.
South Node in Aquarius
Past Soul Memory. Aquarius is a fabulous fixed Air sign, intent on de-conditioning and revolutionizing the mainstream. For this list, we’re looking at less than positive traits. Funny Interlude…
This is a lot of info. Take a breather and watch this hysterical video and think of the archetypes of Leo/Aquarius.
What are we to make of these lists?
South Node. Identify stressful habits and imprints in our life to heal or release in the next year and a half.
North Node. Practice awareness, wake up to our potential, begin to embrace the future.
There’s more to this. We’ll get there.
This isn’t magic. Being present, committed and watchful helps. Life goes on, if we ignore this change. If we look, we can see the symbols in action on a global front. There is the risk that many stay trapped in the traumatic Aquarian imprint.
One can observe objectively, a positive Aquarian trait. Where there is obvious chaos, unpredictability and radical change, the South Node energy is active. Where there is a glimmer of radiance and light, that is the North Node.
How can we heal and release the trauma of Aquarius? We can use Leo, the heart. Love. Radiance. Generosity of Spirit. For me, Love is the answer. That may sound Pollyanna-ish, but that is It for me. It’s usually about someone else, but maybe it’s time to love oneself.
Leo can also be seen in creative ideas (Leo/Aquarius), the awareness of special talents, the generous nature to see other’s talents and gifts. Leo’s bravery is legendary. Honor the (symbolic or real) Kings and Queens who emanate responsibility and love for their dominion, rather than the dictators who control, abuse and unsettle their clans.
Burn out what doesn’t work. Illuminate what does.
To oversimplify, we build on the good stuff, and let go of what doesn’t work any more. We consciously define a ‘new and improved’ Life Path.
What could we imagine for ourselves over the next year and a half?
Step One. To figure what area of our lives are stimulated by this Nodal sign change, the first step is to look at the houses they will travel through. The South Node will bring something in its house to a head. The North Node offers hope for the future.
It is probable that the nodes will be changing signs in a house. The perception of the house qualities will change.
Rather than the more flexible, changeable and illusive feelings (Pisces), which led to some practical considerations (Virgo) in the last year and a half, now the energy is more substantial. Further awareness and change is possible with consistent creativity.
Step Two. Where are Saturn, Uranus (the old stuff) and the Sun (receives a boost) in your birth chart? What house do they live in? Here’s where the real transformation happens. In other words, symptoms in the houses are an apparent issue. The planets reveal the true issue, what is ready for healing and primed for personal power and purpose.
Below is an example, using Vincent Van Gogh’s birth chart.
Houses.
The Nodes of the Moon are always exactly opposite each other, so they will be in opposing houses.
1/7. Relating. Personal identity vs. relating to others. Giving & receiving. Me vs. You.
2/8. Security, Values, Needs. Money. Mine vs. yours. Building security vs. Letting Go and True Sharing. Self-worth. Psychological.
3/9. Communicating. Details vs. Big Picture. Application of Wisdom vs. Searching for Wisdom.
4/10. Environment. Home vs. the World. Inner vs. Outer. Emotional Self-Reliance vs. Contributing to Society.
5/11. Creativity and Contribution. Personal Power vs Collective Power.
6/12. Improvement. Analyzing to improve Self vs. Acceptance of Divine Nature.

What could we imagine happening on the world front using the symbols?
Money. In Raymond Merriman’s financial forecast for 2017, he refers to a study by astrologer Louis McWhirter who witnessed that shortly before, or as the North Node enters Leo, the stock market in the U.S. would reach a high, or a peak. To me, this speaks of the steady burn of Leo, the fixed nature, that doesn’t fluctuate, rather persists. Perhaps this is a response to a radical world environment or unpredictable leaders symbolized by the Aquarius archetype.
Trauma. More attention or exposure regarding PTSD, stress, personality ‘disorders’ leads to projects that focus on healing the heart. Organizations like the Heart Math Institute are further honored and recognized for their work. Experts in psychology develop new methodologies to deal with stress.
Weather. Atmospheric changes (Aquarius is an air sign) lead to dryer conditions (Leo is a fire sign).
Technology. More people become aware of their sensitivities to Electromagnetic Frequencies, become aware of the healing energy of the Sun, or spend less time on devices and more time on themselves.
Entertainment. Movies show even more of the difficult traits of Aquarius and compensate with the more joyful, playful traits of Leo. More interest in borderline personalities. Focus on royal families.
These are not predictions, just a way to play with the symbols. What are your thoughts? Feel free to comment with your creative ideas!
More on the Moon and its Nodes.
The Moon in astrology represents our emotional responses and reactions to what life presents us. Jeffrey Green referred to the Moon as the Ego. Our Ego is our great protector, or so it feels, and it responds by trying to preserve our status quo. It reacts to our emotional needs. (Vedic and Medical Astrology refer to the Moon as the Mind.)
Soul Memory. The South Node of the Moon symbolizes the kinds of experiences which influenced our wonderful Ego/Mind in the past. (Sacrilegious! Wonderful Ego? Aren’t we supposed to let go of Ego? Well, that would leave us in a puddle. Better to train Ego to serve the Soul… meditation, reflection and sincere questioning are some ways to master the Mind.)
In Evolutionary Astrology The PAST means previous incarnations. This model of South Node being connected to Soul Memory is helpful, when contemplating confusing responses to life’s situations that cannot be traced back to actual childhood incidents. Or if they can be traced back, further understanding comes from root cause in other lives.
The North Node of the Moon represents the potential of the future and how our Ego/Mind is destined to serve our Soul or Deepest/Highest Self through empowering responses to life.
Dane Rhudyar wrote that the relevance of the sign change is more related psychological development. In an article found on the Dane Rhudyar Archival Project, he writes, “… the Moon’s nodes represent a type of development in man’s total personality (psychological as well as physical) which brings to this personality a variety of things which the natural-biological spontaneous and instinctual trends of life of themselves would not produce…”
Example
Vincent Van Gogh.
Born: March 30, 1853 11:00 AM LMT, Groot Jundert, Netherlands. Date comes from TimeCycles Research.
These thoughts are not based on his real life, though some of it might feel like it. I just picked an artist whose work I adore.
In 2017 the Aquarius South Node of the Moon will travel the 8th house and in about 6 months, the 7th.
The Leo North Node of the Moon will enter the 2nd house, then the 1st.
Security and money could play a role here. Let’s say erratic income is the issue. Art isn’t paying the bills. Vincent becomes stressed out about it. Maybe the stress turns into psychotic episodes, fluctuating with self-imposed isolation and obsessive behavior. He ignores the bills. In the 8th house, a Shadow or Secret may be involved.
Uranus is in the 10th house, and conjoins with Saturn. They’re both in Taurus, a grounded earth sign. Taurus is security, values, self-worth. Uranus’ mental trauma could be rooted in the lack of respect and status he received in the past. Saturn enforces this belief through further experiences of lack. It’s stressful. With the new phase conjunction, a new consciousness around abundance is meant to awaken, yet how to get there is still mysterious and complicated.
Other people will play a role. Saturn and Uranus rule the 7th and 8th house. They could be psychologists, lawyers, business people, lovers, or debt collectors.
The ‘apparent’ issue is related to lack of money; the true issue is related to old patterns about self-worth and his contributions to society or the status he holds in the world. There’s been some stress in previous lives, perhaps not being seen for who he is, perhaps seen as a worthless commoner rather than an artist with a special talent and spiritual sensitivities (Venus and Mars in Pisces).
If Vincent went to the debt collector to come to an arrangement about his circumstance, he might get back on track for a while. If he used the 8th House South Node transit to get some kind of therapeutic help, he might identify some key areas in his life that are stumbling blocks and transform his life.
Interestingly, the Sun in Aries is in the 10th house, too.
The North Node of the Moon which represents what is ripe for change is active in the 2nd house. We might think of self-reliance, or looking inward to determine true values and core needs.
- What if Van Gogh began to realize that he was too wrapped up in what other people thought about him and didn’t know much about his own personal motivation.
- What if Van Gogh was exposed to the idea of loving himself?
- What if he set out on a path of identifying all his special gifts and the value they held to him.
What if this cycle ignited awareness of his purpose. What if he began to feel his personal power? His special Aries gifts could make difference in the world. By loving himself, identifying his value, working on self-worth, his Vital Energy would increase. He would know what he wanted. His Being would radiate positivity. He might receive status an innovative artist or a leader, or he might not. But he would live a truer, more vibrant fulfilled life.

Harvest in Provence
Uranus and Saturn, now become a positive force of inspired consciousness resulting in masterpieces that reflect Taurus images… salt of the earth, agrarian subjects, fields of natural beauty in Aries colors… reds, oranges, and so on. He begins to trust (8th/2nd polarity) and Saturn begins to put some form into what Uranus has wanted to wake up in him.
I hope you can see the value of this cycle for yourself and how in a short period of time, you can bring more heart and soul into your life.
Peace, Shawn

Want to know more about the Nodes of the Moon?
Lunar Nodes are calculated points that represent where the Moon crosses the ecliptic on a given day. The ecliptic is the path the Sun travels. The South Node is where the Moon is moving downward or south across the ecliptic. The North Node is where the Moon ascends or moves north across the ecliptic. (insert nodesdiagram.png from Wikipedia.)
The Nodes travel in retrograde motion meaning when they change signs, the new sign will be the previous one in the natural zodiac. In 2017, the Pisces South Node changes to Aquarius. The Virgo North Node moves to Leo.
Evolutionary Astrologer Steven Forrest wrote an exceptional article about the Lunar Nodes on his blog. It is especially informative, if you are wondering about the difference in working with the True and Mean Nodes.
All planets have a South and a North Node. Those planetary nodes move slowly, so it’s harder to track in our own lives. The Moon’s Nodes are more interesting and relevant, because we can see them in action in our charts.
